Just gets to the point Quinn and staff did not have the players ready for the season. No accountability, discipline and leaders made this a poor defense. I am glad the previous regime is gone. Now to dig out of the hole TD has left the team in cap wise.

Agree completely. Dan Quinn and his entire staff were mostly hot garbage with the exception of Kyle Shanahan.
I've been watching pro football since I was a kid and I've never seen anything comparable to the pathetic, complete disarray of the Falcons defense in the Quinn era. It was literally a comedic farce.
That's all over with the hiring of AS and TF. They're a perfect match for what we needed. AS can resurrect the Shannie offense which is the best scheme for us.
Fontie is the brilliant disciple of one of the craftiest GM's in the NFC. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of every team in our division and has a gift for coming up with high-value, low-priced FA's.
I've said it a bunch of times already, the bad times are over. It's going to be fun watching the Falcons play football again. And I'm hoping that starts right now, this year, not two or three years down the road.

I've been watching the Falcons for 40 years now and NEVER have i seen more confused players on defense than during Quinn's tenure.  Countless times we couldn't even get lined up before the ball was snapped. I'll be shocked if we don't see an immediate improvement.

The guys running these teams aren't as smart as we make them out to be. Quinn shouldn't be anywhere near an NFL roster.

Like when Campbell said 'we didn't take them seriously' in reference to the 2018 loss to the Browns. That falls on the HC right there.
As I said in another thread, Quinn just wanted to be buddies with the players which led to a complete lack of discipline. Players would f-up and Quinn would be waiting on the sideline to fist bump them.

Problem I saw was DK was clueless how to utilize Hurts topline speed. You had to scheme to get him in man coverage on crossing routes or quick slants. All Hurst needed was to be moving as the ball was coming to him and he could outrun most any defender and take it to the house.  I saw two Buffalo Bill CBs chase him 60 yards and not get a step on him. He was clocked at 21 MPH on that 60 yard run which is INSANE CB level top end speed.
Keotter wasted so much talent forcing players into his inflexible scheme and was utterly predictable.

I'm really glad to hear that they're not gonna go too easy on the vets anymore. That was a serious problem on this team, especially after the Superbowl.
People got really lazy and entitled, wouldn't work their assignments, and tried to play hero ball all the time. Instead of getting a dose of humility from that terrible loss, the team somehow got arrogant.
Pretty sure that's what happened with Vic and Takk. They were Quinn's special little pass rush boys and he clearly never kicked their *****. That's why the team loved him I guess.
So ready to see some actual toughness and grit drilled into these guys. This team has been soft for far too long.

It's a new era & time for this D to stop being so predictable & easy to scheme against.  All defenses can bend & break & suffer by being too aggressive.  But I love the mentality of making QB's uncomfortable & attacking from all angles on the field.  The falcons for example, would rarely send a Corner on a barn burner blitz off the edge... or a S up the middle.  When we began sending our LBers, we found some nice success & saw that our LBers were quite good at it.

Terry never said he wanted to trade Julio just that in this business you have to listen to the offers. For what it's worth I think a 2nd rounder is too low for JJ. I also would not expect a trade to happen before the end of TC. A need is going to develop for some team, it always does, and Julio will fetch multiple draft picks. I love JJ but at this point in his career the draft capital and cap relief are more important to the future of the franchise  than JJ being a Falcon for life.

I would run to select JOK if he’s there at 35. One of the few difference makers I watched this year. You scheme to set him loose and you’ll have some very happy fans, trust me. Dude is a heat seeking missile, a leader, and can cover better than Deion Jones.

Here's a thought how many games did the Falcons lose by 7 pts or less? Now if the Falcons could have converted those field goals into Tds don't you think that would have made a difference? Yes Falcs need defense but the flip side is covert 3 pts to 7 and you win enough games probably in the playoffs.

I think the tape can tell you many things. The lack of synergy and timing was apparent. The reason is debatable and that’s a core flaw.
I do agree the Falcons lacked in receiving but maybe if they had TE depth or backs that could catch and those players get YAC; it would start to loosen the burden on the top receivers.

Hey, a run game...play action...passing out of heavy run looks. Wow what a time to be back!
It’s true it’s not everything but it really is glossed over by the majority of casual fans from the volume of dialogue on the interwebs.
I can’t explain exactly why Dirk had fell out of touch but I have a feel for why. I’m not some player eval genius and far from it but to me it’s basic that the better teams have some combination of players and scheme.
^It’s true, to your point, that you can’t really have one without the other if you want winning results anyway...

My basic counter is this: We had enough players in 2019 and 2020 to be better, but a complete lack of one aspect; actually running the ball(?!), and relying on check downs if the big play isn’t there just played against itself. Dirk plays against his own hand by simply not developing his run scheme. Square pegs and round holes all over the place with him as a hire. When they asked Mularkey to co-sign? It was all over as soon as he retired after the fiasco of 2019 ended. 1-7? How embarrassing. Then, 0-5? Good thing he got out!
It makes folks wish we had a do it all QB to get more flashy plays, but it would end in a similar fashion; even if generating some semblance of run threat to open pass lanes. The challenge, of course, is sustainability. Let alone creativity coming from a player source which is the point.
I put most of our chance of turnaround on the coach changes; at least with regards to the offense.
That 2016 offense wasn’t that big of an all star roster, either. It was pieced together and made to work. It’s basically Julio, Ryan and a run game/backfield. Sanu/Gabriel/Hoop were not world beaters just role players.
So, we need players with roles created by the offense itself; rather than static it needs to be dynamically tapped into so as to help each other produce in a way that leads to more points.
Getting the whole field involved again will help with the HR plays and also the RZ efficiency.
I’m down for RB at 35 even if we take Pitts at 4.

Nothing is more pathetic than fielding a crappy, unprepared team that loses a bunch of games it should win, and then, on top of it, winning a bunch of meaningless late season games because of "heroics."
Screw "heroics." Field a team that is worth a ****e in the first place. And if they ain't, don't worry about heroics. Just lose like the loser team you are, get higher draft picks, and fix that crap next year.
    Superbowls. That is what matters.

If we “tanked” in 2019 like we should have we would have Chase Young, the best player in last years draft.
We wisely sucked in 2020 and will end up with the best player in this draft in Pitts.

This happens every year and is a great exercise.  Those that think we have to take a QB this year because there won’t be any next, this is a good reminder people come out of no where each year.

Burrow came out of no where for last years draft at #1 overall, Wilson likely the #2 pick the same for this year.
