Does anybody know why Trufant was so inefficient when Marquand was our DC? How does Quinn utilize Trufant as compared to Manuel?
Correct me if im wrong, but is it b/c Marquand forced Trufant to play off-man and give a cushion rather than letting Trufant get physical at the LOS and jam guys?

Things I expect to see more of:
    1. Cover 1 with Robber - this was our bread and butter once Tru  went down in 2016.  Requires solid CB play on the outside and a high IQ FS.   With Rico healthy, we can use this again.

Dre works great in this concept.  If the QB makes a poor read or bad throw, he can destroy the slot receiver. For an example, look at the first play from scrimmage in SB 51.
    2.  Dime Coverage Wrinkles: something that is really hard on a quarterback is when multiple defenders have robber responsibilities.  This is how we confused Brady in the first half of SB 51 and ultimately forced him into a pick-6

Here, Alford starts out on Edelman with Neal robbing in the middle. When Edelman crosses, the Falcons switch roles.
Brady was not ready for it. He assumes that Alford, who has been on Edelman consistently, would simply do whatever necessary to follow him. But the “robber” is actually waiting to pick up Edelman because he is the first to cross into the middle of the field, leaving Alford free in the middle to “rob” Brady’s throw.

    3.  Debo Disguised Drops Into Coverage:  another wrinkle out of man coverage in 2016 was having Deion Jones align over the center or guard and then drop back to double-team the closest inside receiver.  This is how he will get 4-5 INT’s in 2016.  Only works if Dre can lock down the TE, which he did in 2017 but struggled with last year

CMarinoNFL got a reaction from Unintentional Grounding in 2020 Prospect Review: DE Curtis Weaver
HUGE fan of Boise State DE Curtis Weaver (6-3 264). Plays the “STUD” position at BSU. Position essentially calls for an athlete who can rush the passer at the strong side or drop into coverage. Reminds me of what Quinn looks for in a LEO:
“always lines up on the LOS and blitzes, generally a player that is smaller than a DE but bigger than an OLB (240-250 lbs), pass rush ability, can control his gap and take on other responsibilities (such as coverage) from time-to-time, ‘quinn and carroll have tended towards using lighter, more athletic players at the position in recent years, like bruce irvin’ (6-3, 250. 4.5 40) or vic beasley (6-3, 246. 4.53 40)”
Ideal Falcons LEO fit who can play with his hand in the dirt. 28 TFL and 20.5 sacks in two seasons. Phenomenal hand usage. Also high in character.
If Cominsky plays out the 5 technique, which I imagine he will, the Falcons may want to see Weaver at the LEO (7T/9T). However, his best fit is probably at SDE (5T) because of his ability to do both: pass rush and stop the run. Think Steven Means, who was supposed to start at SDE.

CMarinoNFL got a reaction from VTCrunkler in This makes me think LBer could be the first pick next year
There’s probably interest in a LB, but I highly doubt in the first. For a team who employs the nickel package (2 linebackers: MLB/WLB) about 70% of the time, the Falcons aren’t at an immediate need at the position. They’ve got Deion Jones, who I can't imagine they would let walk easily and Foye Oluokun, who has taken off season strides. DeVondre is mainly a base SLB & a pass rusher in a sub package. For what it’s worth, a SLB in this system is probably a round 4-6 value. I’m thinking it’ll be a DE early or a 3 technique defensive tackle that the Falcons can use as a cornerstone along with GJ, as compared to rentals like Davison, and probably Crawford too. Need to build the future on the DL. Must add to Senat and Grady.
The team is grossly thin at 4-3 DE. If we see a switch to a 3-4 base, which is possible, the team may be looking for a starting 4T aside from Grady. But for now, I see McKinley taking the next step and the front office being scared of Beasley’s inconsistency and non-transparent contract.
