BritFalcon reacted to Power I in Julio Jones Has Highest Receiving Yards Per Game In Nfl History
This whole thread is pointless. We have enough cap room to sign another Julio Jones at $15M if we wanted. Next year we'll have yet another $15M just by cutting Baker, Soliai, and Jackson if we wanted. If we were strapped for cash this debate might be worth 20 pages, but since no one likes to give our front office credit for pretty great cap management as it stands now, there's no reason to even talk about it. We can sign Julio and Von Miller if they so choose.

I can't believe this thread is still going. You guys realise that you'll never be able to talk FFS1970 round right? He fundamentally believes that there is only one way to build a championship roster - get a star RB, OL and DL and then build outwards until you get to stud receiver. Trading for and extending Julio Jones at the rate he will command goes against everything that he believes in. He is entitled to that viewpoint, even if he is completely and utterly wrong IMHO. No amount of facts, figures or subjective argument is going to change his mind.
When you guys accept this, you'll be more contented...like I am
Now, back to Julio getting that record...awesome achievement right?

...but none of that is relevant, to the question of whether we should re-sign JJ.
The only thing that matter is the cost and what else we could do with that money, that would make us a better team that spending it on Julio.
The idea that we could rebuild the whole team from the inside out via Free Agency doesn't stack up.The best teams in the NFL keep their best players and very rarely let them go. When they spend big $ it is to keep their best player! rather than taking a punt on free agents.
That $15m might buy you 1 elite defensive player (if we are lucky enough for one to become available who fits our scheme and needs). Even then, that elite defensive player could turn out to be a free agency bust like Haynesworth or Aso, or a poor value 8-9 sack a year guy like Julius Peppers. There might be an argument for saying that 3-4 FA players in the $4-5m per year price range makes more sense. It spreads the talent rather than tieing it up in 1 player - with the risk you could get zero production if that 1 guy gets hurt. That would arguably make us better if we can find 3 good value players, but that's far from guaranteed. Are 3 Tyson Jackson/Asamoah level players a better investment than 1 elite game changer?
As for money, that's really not an issue. When we were 13-3 we had a number of players with very sizeable contracts on the books (Ryan, Roddy, Turner, Gonzo, Abe, Robinson) and were able to balance the books and be successful. These days we only have Ryan, Julio and a declining Roddy White - and it will be a few years before we have to look at extending any other top talents.

We're regurgitating the "Julio is a shiny hood ornament" argument AGAIN? What happened to celebrating his accomplishment as the WR with the highest receiving yards per game in NFL history?

I find it amazing that after years and years of watching this Defense fail to get off the field on 3rd down and routinely make the poorest of QB's look like Hall of Famer's, there are people on this board who think the answer to our prayers is Gurley. You'd think these people would be sick and tired of watching the same thing happen over and over again.
The irony? If we don't draft a pass rusher in the first round, we won't be running the ball with Gurley anyway because Matt will forever be in catch-up mode trying to get the ball deep to the "hood ornament"

While I would love to have the number one defense, I am not demanding it. I certainly hope we have a top 10 defense after a couple of years, but I won't flip out if it's not number one.
What I want is balance. I want a defense that can get three and outs and turnovers. I want a balanced offense that keeps the defense off of the field.
We still need defensive help to get there.

Wrong. Ignoring that you're somehow trying to equate their defense to ours because they were 20th in sacks, we lost Osi, at worst our 2nd most often used pass rusher, as well as Corey Peters, who (since you seem to love to use stats) was our best pass rushing DT, as well as Massequoi, who many here thought was our most talented DE. Biermann is not anything gained, we had him last year and still have him. We essentially replaced Osi, Mass, and Peters with Schofield, Clayborn, and Reid.
I think it's an upgrade but it's still a serious weakness. Since you're helIbent on using stats, we lost 6 sacks and replaced them with 5. So by your own stupid logic, we're worse.
If you want to go by your even goofier logic of using each player's best season as the criteria for how good our pass rush will be this year, we lost 23.5 "at best" sacks this year and gained 18 sacks.
So by your logic, we're worse in the pass rush that's already the worst in the NFL.
We need pass rushers. Don't kid yourself. We can get a Pro-Bowl potential bellcow in the 2nd or 3rd if Shanny knows who he wants for his system. But TD has never drafted a pass rusher early and we're reaping the rewards of that right now. If Ray, Beasley, and arguably Gregory and Dupree are gone, sure, take someone else. Like Landon Collins. But don't hamstring this team by aiming for Gurley and freakin Nate Orchard, who I've watched plenty of and was not remotely impressed by. Maybe he has a flashy highlight reel, but I don't see him being anything other than an at-best marginal improvement for this team, whereas Abdullah/Johnson/Ajayi are all major upgrades to the run.

Off course there are women here. I don't post a lot, but I do read the posts all the time. I stay away from TATF MB during off season. Off season is the time I travel the world, work and leisure. Mock draft is not my thing. Despite all the progress we have done on gender equality, there will still be some prick who is just waiting for me to say one wrong thing about football, to be condescending in their response. No big deal to me because I know the same prick would not say it to my face. Other than that, most here are really respectful.
Keep up the good work, Mods!

People these days seem to have shorter and shorter fuses. Can't say anything without someone feeling offended and turning it into a protest. Seems ridiculous to me when that person is basically on your side 95% of the time.

We should make a thread celebrating the women in here. Too many avenues in the real world where they're forced to take a backseat. This shouldn't be one of them.

Personally, I'm completely against censorship, which is why I don't believe in reporting people for disagreeing with me. I don't really agree with those who are anti-TD or who want Julio traded for picks, but their ideas are often thought-provoking and they allow me the opportunity to reconsider my own thoughts.
When people realise that we're all just expressing our love for the Falcons, then this message board will become a more tolerant place. Hopefully, we'll get to that point. Kudos to the mods!

This place and some posters on it used to get to me a lot more than they ever do now...I realized that I wasn't ever going to meet 98% of you and we're just a bunch of people posting on a football message board...
It's not as important as your health, your faith, your friends, your family or your job.
So someone disagrees with me. Thank God.
I wouldn't want to live in a world where everyone agreed with me. I'd get bored with that in about 5 minutes.
If it's that important for you to be liked or agreed with on every subject then you need to probably get off of every form of social media there is.
If you think someone is a troll or is trolling you in particular avoid them. It's easy once you get into the habit. I call it the "dog poop on the sidewalk" method. Don't step in it. Hop over it and avoid it completely.
This place is a pleasant little diversion from life. Don't make it into anything else.
Honestly, there isn't a single person I have ever fought with on here that I don't think I could sit down and have a beer with today.
