Report: Falcons begin contract negotiations with 2020 free agent Deion Jones
2 Getting a jump on signing their most essential defender is a great idea.

The Falcons have long been one of the better teams in the NFL when it comes to getting deals done early. This offseason thus far has been an object lesson in what can happen if you can’t get that done, as Vic Beasley will be here for $12.8 million on a one year deal and Grady Jarrett was just given the franchise tag as the team tries to get something long-term done.
Given that, it’s no great surprise that the Falcons are already opening up contract talks with Deion Jones, their star middle linebacker and the next huge contract heading their way. Debo won’t be a free agent until after the 2019 season, but avoiding a situation where the team needs to consider a tag or even letting Jones walk is paramount given his importance to this defense.
Consider this: Debo will only be 25 years old in 2019, and while he’s coming off a major injury, he was still a phenomenal player in just six games. He managed 53 tackles, six pass deflections, two interceptions, a forced fumbles, a sack, and a defensive touchdown over that span despite clearly being a little rusty, and the two seasons prior he managed over 100 tackles, three interceptions, and over 10 pass deflections. His speed and athleticism mean he can get involved in plays he’s light years away from when they begin, his instincts are so good he can make life miserable for opposing offenses, and he’s still young enough to get even better. The defense simply isn’t as fast and physical without him, and he’s arguably the single most crucial defender the Falcons have.
There’s little question Jones will be looking to blow by Luke Kuechly for the most lucrative inside linebacker contract in the NFL, which means north of $12.35 million in annual average value. The Falcons will be challenged to do that with their current cap situation, but aside from retaining the likes of Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, and Grady Jarrett, it’s the most essential signing they can possibly get done. I fully expect them to, and I’m glad they’re starting relatively early.
Hopefully, the negotiations with Jones will proceed apace and the team will have him locked up before the 2019 season ever begins.

Drop a 26 year old for a 31 year old for more money? Makes all the sense in the world...

You have to remember, its the Falcons, we always give talent a lot more money than they deserve.  Trufant, Alford, Schreader, Freeman for that matter.  They have a hard time understanding who actually wins games for them.  Dimarco, Toilolo etc..

    Player A: 6 Years, 135 Million, 87 Million guaranteed
    Player B: 6 Years , 84 Million, 60 Million guaranteed

He’s not worth 15 million a year at this point of his career. He may get it but his performance won’t live up to it. I’d like to have him for less though.

He received an overall grade of 44.2 from Pro Football Focus, which ranked 87th among all qualifying linebackers in 2018.
Was rightfully benched after week 13 and that was it.
So has anyone heard on his future with Falcons?
His replacement Devin White is killin it at Combine.....what a difference a year makes!!
Deion Jones and Devin White fastest LBs in NFL on Falcons roster??!!

It may be that we accept one 1st this year and 1st next year.
    I'd be good with that!
Let's not pay Donald money until we actually get a Donald!

Wow you guys are all jumping the shark here on the freak out.
Typical negotiation BS.  Falcons have somewhat of an upper hand with the franchise tag - we can control Grady for two more years and at a price we want - although we cannot monkey around with salary cap.
These next two years are when Grady will be at his likely best and we can limit him to like $15mm and $17mm per year - when he wants more - the risk is Grady’s.
I hate it when Falcons brass fail to use their power over players- this happens with every team eventually.
Just let this play out, a long time to go and a deal is still more likely to get done than not.
Falcons tag Grady and he is only guaranteed $15mm and all the risk  on him.
Falcons sign Grady long term and he gets $40mm guaranteed and can relax somewhat.
Agent has almost no power in this struggle.   Let it play out

I wouldn't have a problem with that.  A team that wants to give us 2 firsts can have him from where I sit.  A 5th round player for 2 first round picks?  That's the kind of math winning teams use.
Don't get me wrong, I want him around.  But he would then have to decide whether he wants to solicit an offer sheet and go play for a cap-rich, win-poor team, or deal with us.  It would also help set the market for him.

Yes I think if you tag him, that's the way you go. No one will give 2 ones but you can negotiate that I understand.

We are not talking about Aaron Donald here.  Jarrett is good but so was the Seahawks in 2013, so was the Saints D line this past year, so was the Cowboys D line this past year.
Case in point, a lot of great defensive lines function with out Grady Jarrett.  Jarrett can go get paid some where else and we can start getting some real bodies on the defensive line

So many good dts in FA and the draft this year. I say draft his replacement and we can even sign someone like Suh, or McCoy.

Everytime I've heard Grady interview over the last few months, he sounded like a player looking more at FA, than interest in what the Falcons had to offer. He seemed to just being saying the right things about being here, not really into it. Just a feeling i got from listening to him multiple times. So hearing they wanted to hit FA , doesn't surprise me.  Like ive said from the beginning, I liked him as a player, but he's chasing money. Us trying to make him happy right now , is just bad business. They either need to let him walk or tag him and trade him, unless they are actually close. Especially if he's unhappy to the point of holding out. He's not worth all the BS.

Takk & Vic are 1st rounders...Senat a 3rd round pick.  Brought in Irvin.  2nd most expensive OL in NFL history.
    And I’m sure they’ve offered Grady 15-16 mill/avg.
    Isnt that effort?

Maybe a pick and cap rich team like OAK. Grady for their 27th overall pick. Frees up $15.2M for us and gives us 10 picks, including two first rounders, in this year's draft. We could go something like Oliver and Lindstrom in the first with Lawrence in the second.

I know it's a business, but if a team bought my family a new home when it caught fire, I'd do everything I could to stay loyal to them.
Dude is starting to remind me of the Brent Grimes situation.

I know they could still technically reach a deal next year, but it’s a pretty sad thought that a player of Grady’s caliber won’t be a career Falcon like his dad was.

Until we get through the draft & free agency and actually have his replacement in the roster, it'd be foolish to let him walk right now. Tagging him is the right move because it provides us with a lot more flexibility:

    1. He has another year like this past one... good but not even close to great... so we gain even more leverage in a long-term deal because we can point to his production continuing to not quite be on the level of the highest paid players at his position.

    2. If he plays out of his mind this year, at lest he's doing it for us & not potentially for a rival. We get a better look at his potential, and more time to work out a long-term deal if he proves he's truly worth that kind of money.

    3. If we draft/sign a suitable replacement this offseason, we can try to trade him during the season for picks in next year's draft.

    4. We let him play under the tag this year while a rookie DT gets acclimated to the NFL, then let him hit FA next offseason & get a nice comp pick when some other team hands him a massive deal.

And that’s ridiculous. No way should Atlanta give him that.

Love Grady but I'm good with tagging him and letting him go next year.  If he really is asking for AD money, we don't have a place for him on this team.  Need to hit on a DT this year tho.
