I do like Sewell, but tbh I like Rashawn Slater more. Such a smoother operator and is versatile enough to move anywhere you want on the line. My issue with taking Sewell at 4 is you have to play him at tackle and I think moving either Matthews or McGary inside ends in disaster. Neither of them are versatile enough or good enough with their leverage at that height to kick inside. It would make our issue at guard even more pronounced.

The problem with this ideology is if a young DC comes here and balls out, they are more likely to get poached and you start from scratch.
At least with Pees coming and a possible addition of a co DC, the Falcons will be set up to pass the torch. Not just start over.

Regarding Fontenot, it’s notable (and laudable) that the Falcons did not let the fact that hiring Fontenot would result in Atlanta handing extra third-round picks to their arch-rivals in the next two drafts. (A 2020 NFL rule, in an effort to stimulate minority hiring, rewards teams with two late third-round picks for developing minority coaches and GMs.) Two reasons: Fontenot was a candidate for several jobs, and he could easily have been hired elsewhere, meaning the Saints would have gotten the picks anyway. And if you don’t hire a GM you love because you don’t want to give a rival the 100th picks (estimated) in the next two drafts, how much did you really love him? A great GM should be worth more than two mid-round picks.
    6. ARTHUR SMITH. Atlanta had one advantage in the GM and coach search: time. When the Falcons fired coach Dan Quinn and GM Thomas Dimitroff in October, it gave them 73 days before the end of the season to fact-find on coaches and GMs. The end was a bit hairy; Atlanta thought Smith, the imaginative Tennessee offensive coordinator, was the man the Falcons wanted to hire, but then he left town after a long in-person interview Wednesday to meet with the Jets, and then he flew to Florida to meet with the Eagles’ contingent led by owner Jeff Lurie and GM Howie Roseman—for six hours. After being led by a defensive head coach (Mike Smith, Quinn) for the last 13 seasons, the progressive offense of Smith, in addition to his global view of the job, was inviting for Atlanta. My bet is that Smith would be in favor of keeping Matt Ryan and trying to build around a good skill group to topple the Saints and Bucs in the NFC South.

Somebody is thinking just like me with my favorite OLineman in the draft.
    Falcons
    Rashawn Slater
    OT, Northwestern
    Okay, everybody calm down.
Here’s what I’ve got. I’ve got Daniel Jeremiah, who’s a great barometer for the league, ranking Slater above Penei Sewell. I’ve got Lance Zierlein, another league barometer, agreeing with him. I’ve got Matt Miller, who’s always well-sourced, saying multiple scouting directors and area scouts prefer Slater to Sewell.
So I’m thinking there’s a good chance that Slater goes ahead of Sewell come draft day. That’s not how I have them stacked on my board—though I love both—but that could be how this goes.
The new Atlanta GM looks to be Terry Fontenot, who comes from the New Orleans tree. That Saints front office has drafted a trench player in the first round of five of their last six drafts—and in 2019, when they didn’t have a first-round pick, they took Erik McCoy in the second. Four of those trench picks have been offensive linemen, as New Orleans poured talent into a seemingly solid offensive line, and to their benefit—they have a top-three OL in the league.
Atlanta attacked OL heavily in the 2019 NFL Draft, bringing in Chris Lindstrom and Kaleb McGary with first-round picks. McGary hasn’t been great, Alex Mack is likely leaving in free agency, Jake Matthews can be improved upon, and left guard could still use a starter. Slater is a great fit for all of those issues: he has guard/tackle versatility, so he can fight for multiple jobs in camp, and is a high-quality run blocker in space for the Arthur Smith run-heavy approach.

The Saints have definitely drafted a lot of O Linemen in the first round. The Titans have drafted a few early as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fontenot and Smitty go OL early.
