We can't be happy with Beasley, as he was a first rounder. But he played 78 games for Atlanta for 36.5 sacks, so I don't think he's a true bust. If he was a 5th rounder, we'd be delighted with that production. With a first rounder, we expect great things- quite often it doesn't happen.

The good thing is we are at the top of the second and every round till the end without needing a trade. If Trask does make it through the first round, we could get him if we wanted him.

The issue now becomes, as the first few picks will all be QB's, the ones who might have been 2nd or 3rd rounders, will get moved up as teams overvalue the remaining QB's. So as said above, the secondary level QB will now go late first or early 2nd. That's how I see it.

Unions are needed in many industries.

I worked in foundries for a pretty long time.

Believe me. Having a union was very necessary.

Total waste of value. You'd automatically be making him one of the top 5 paid RBs in the league which is crazy for a rookie. You need to grab a valuable position like QB, DE or CB in order to maximize that rookie contract.

BlazerSlayer reacted to JDaveG in A question for Falcons fans who don't think that we should draft a quarterback at 4?
My plan -- and I'm not the GM so I don't know what his plan is -- would be to stockpile draft capital.  I would trade down in this draft and not trade back up.  I'd use the assets acquired in next year's draft and re-assess.  If Ryan plays well and is not injured going into 2020, I might trade out of the round again next year with one pick, probably not both.  Stockpile more.
Then, when the iron is hot, you have the draft capital to strike.  Best case scenario, someone you like falls to your spot, wherever it is.  Worst case scenario you are stockpiling a lot of picks and can use them to pick players other than QB if it doesn't work out.
I'm not worried about being able to get a QB later on.  That will sort itself out, plus you don't need a top 5 pick to get one.  A top 5 picked QB hasn't won the Super Bowl in 5 years.  And before that, it was 4 years prior.  Both of them had the last name "Manning."  The rest of the Super Bowl winning QBs over the past 10 years have been out of the top 5 picks.  Including two 3rd rounders, and not even mentioning Brady as a unicorn 6th round pick.  The only two non-Mannings to win a Super Bowl in the last 10 years who were drafted in the 1st at all were Aaron Rodgers (once) and Joe Flacco (also once).
    Build the team.

It happens with every team that feels they have a franchise QB. The longer you keep them the smaller the percentage gets.
The issue is the salary cap. While it helps to level the playing field, the NFL is unlike other leagues due to revenue sharing. So despite how much every team makes they still get the same cut from the league which is about the same amount as the salary cap. The league can survive without it but it makes the game more fun to be there.
You can't avoid it. If you want a franchise QB you have to sign them long term. They don't fall from trees. There isn't 5 in every draft. Maybe one every other draft. Even ones that look promising, say Andrew Luck for instance, can just retire or disappear out of the blue.
The Falcons issue for the past three lousy seasons was coaching not QB play. Ryan isn't expensive and he is better than four wins.

I read a book recently about the cap.  It was a book from 2017, which talked about the Patriots, and the various methods they use to find salary cap value.
One off the things they realised, was that the DL market is driven by  sack numbers. Therefore, to build a pass rush at low cost, they look for free agent DL who generate consistent pressure, but don’t have the sack numbers which drive prices up. They can add a number of such players, for the price of a top DE.
I though it was an interesting approach to building a pass rush - as opposed to throwing big $ at expensive FAs...

I was born in Tampa but moved here by choice 15 years ago. I never got Dish or anything so barely got Bucs games anymore and just started watching Falcons games out of convenience. I grew dissatisfied with the losing and ineptitude and garbage Tampa fans but drafting Jameis Winston fully pushed me away.
