DOB with a good stat. Braves won 11 of 15 playoff series when they win Game 1. Just 3 of 20 when they don't. Of course they're 0-9 in their last 9 Game 1's.
These two teams last met in an NLCS. The Braves swept the Reds 4-0. That was back in 1995.
I didn't see three possible picks at all, but if you can show me I'm certainly willing to be wrong. The one he did throw was a miscommunication with the receiver running the wrong route, per Kirby. I know everyone likes to play the "Kirby doesn't really mean that" game when he's not saying what they want to hear but that's what he said.
Mathis definitely needs to improve. His situational awareness is a part of that. I noticed Kirby asking him what down it was when he went back in the game late and got to 3rd down. He's human and allowed to make mistakes. He wouldn't be the first player to get his nerves wrecked in his first big start. Coaches coach players through these things. I think having Bennett turned out to be great because he has the experience to at least be steady out there. It's hard to imagine Bennett leading the offense past the tougher defenses we will see though, including Auburn this week. Arkansas might be the worst defense we play this season.
Anyway, I'm going to fundamentally disagree with your take on Mathis. I think he earned the starting nod and just had a bad game. He got rattled, he played poorly. I think you still give him every opportunity to turn it around if you think he provides the most upside for this offense. By all means lets get Bennett more reps with the 1s though.
