falconfansince66 got a reaction from etherdome in Forget the position and the rookie year - draft a pillar player for the franchise
I think we're still going to roll with Ryan, at least for a couple of more years so picking the 3rd/4th best QB in THIS draft at the fourth pick seems to be potentially a waste at this time considering that player wouldn't even sniff any playing time unless Ryan goes down.
IF we're picking at the fourth pick and QB's were selected in the first three picks, then you have to consider Pitts, who appears to be a generational talent and also considering that Hurst contract that'll be coming up soon.  Or with the case of JJ's staying injured a lot and Ridley coming up on a contract renewal soon, do you pick a rusty WR in Chase who didn't even play this past year?  Maybe even Sewell, who also didn't play this year for your OL?  I think if we pick here, we must go BPA and that appears to be Pitts.
Another option, if presented is trading down to get more picks, especially a 2022 first round pick, that if combined with next year's pick, could land us back up in a position to grab one of next year's top QB's and at a time more 'bench friendly' considering Ryan's status as a starter.  We can always use the extra picks and if needed could spend one of those extra picks to grab a Mond/Trask/etc in this year's draft and if they learn and can show that they're suitable as a future starter, then all the extra picks can be used to get defensive help and even grab potentially one of the top three RB's.
I think using the pick to acquire more draft capital this year (and next) would be the best way to go but if we must pick at #4, then we must go BPA.

This would be my hope as I don't see them doing very well next season and having their first rounder is likely a top ten pick to work with.

Pitts is a red zone beast.  Even if he doesn't get 65 ypg, as long as he's hauling in Matt's high end zone passes for TDs, who cares? Bring him home!  I just hope we get him because if we don't, Carolina's going to be foaming out of their mouths to snag him at #8 and I'm pretty sure, he'll make us regret it.

disagree that a great TE isn't worth as much as a wr.  I'd take Travis Kelce over just about any wr.  And the fact that they don't cost as much makes them even more valuable.

falconfansince66 reacted to BLM in SMH Falcons drafting TE at 4th...Really BAD start for new Regime
If Falcons draft Kyle Pitts at 4th, this regime is already doomed.  While I am in the camp that would like to see us draft Fields or Lance and ideally Fields, with Ryan's restructure, it just doesn't completely make sense to draft a QB.  So I am open to drafting at another position.

But a TE?  Come on man!

I don't care how good a TE is, a TE is not worth more than a WR.  Just look at player salaries.  The top WRs earn about $10M more than TEs.  There is 0, I mean 0, justification to draft a TE when you can grab someone like Chase, Waddle or Smith.  0 rationale.  A 3rd WR can run routes in the middle and can run any route a TE can.  Just look at the Rams and their 3 WR set.  Or the Packers.  Many good offenses don't have a dominant TE but instead know how to get a 3rd WR involved.   And with Julio Jones imminent retirement, a WR just makes sense.  TEs are like RBs.  Only transcendent players are worth a 1st rounder.  Top talents should only be had in the early second round.
Additionally, TEs take a while to develop.  I am talking 2 or 3 years.  WRs can make an impact in their first year.  Just look at the TEs drafted in the 1st, and their production in the first few years.  Noah Fant, Evan Engram, OJ Howard, Hayden Hurst, etc... All of these guys have had more hype than production.   Unless Pitts is a transcendent TE, there is absolutely 0 reason to draft him in the first round.  0.  If we restructure Ryan, that means our goal is to win now.  Drafting a TE in the first is NOT a win now move.  It's bad if you commit to Ryan, won't draft a QB, but instead end up drafting a TE, which basically suggests that you are still looking to win 3 years out as opposed to today, but choose a position of MUCH LESS importance.  If we need more weapons on offense, WR is the only choice if the goal is to win now.
And guess what, Pitts is NOT a transcendent TE.  Do you know why that is?  Well, a TE is a TE because a TE can block.  Pitts cannot block.  Read any scouting report, and it'll say that Pitts has issues in pass protection.  He is just ok at run blocking.
What this means is that Pitts is a large sized, glorified WR, and not a true TE.  Why draft a large WR, when you can draft an actual WR?  An actual WR will be much better at catching, route running, and gaining separation.  It's one thing if Pitts blocking ability makes up for not having elite route running.  But Pitts doesn't have that blocking ability.
If Falcons draft Kyle Pitts in the 1st, that along with hiring Chicago Bears OC and QB coaches (Bears have yet to develop a QB or run any sort of creative offense), along with Blank/McKay only planning to hire a coach that was willing to keep Ryan around (despite their misleading public statements), are already laying the groundwork for another average 5 years before we inevitably find another new coaching regime.

I wouldn't be totally against this, just throw a 5th round offer and be done (he was picked in 6th round).  Dude had more TD's than Kyler Murray this season and this would allow us to focus more on defense.  I still wouldn't budge from snagging Pitts (who the Panties need really bad) at #4 though.  I like the way you're thinking.

Perfect. I see this as setting the market for Gardner Minshew. If a former first rounder goes for this, we should be able to get Minshew for a sixth this year and a fourth next, backup qb position would be set with a young, competent, cheap, experienced player...and free up our entire draft to fill other holes...

I think considering the Panties still have their #8 pick, they are now 'hoping' someone moves into our #4 picking position so that their chances of taking one of the top playmakers (Pitts or Chase IMHO)to pick out a QB. Hard to say if CIN picks Sewell and MIA likely picks one of those mentioned if we give up the pick.  They just made their 'Chess move' and it'll be up to TF to look over the affect that staying in at #4 to likely get Pitts now which I would really hate to see fall to Carolina.
