Free Agency Negotiating Tactics Courtesy Of The Opening Drive On Sirus

07 March 2013 - 08:44 AM

Thought I would pass this along as it makes a ton of sense.  Bob Papa and Ross Tucker host a morning show on Sirus and were talking about how teams will negotiate with some of their own and potential free agents.  It has the potential for disaster and most certainly doesn't work with high end free agents (qb's and marquee players).

GM's will bring in said player sit them down and make them a contract offer.  Usually a fair deal for that player's skill set and position.  The player is then told that they have a limited time frame on signing that deal.  The player is also told that we have player A, B, C who has a similar skill set as you but we want you first and foremost.  If you walk out on this deal now, know right now that that deal is off the table for you and we are going to offer it to player A next, then B, so on and so forth.

Not sure why I found this so interesting but it does seem to put some power back into the GM's court.   They also did say that they have had one player ask for the phone to call their old team to tell them what they offered and to see if they would match it (no names there).

Point being do you think the Falcons have done this in the past or will be doing it with the likes of Willy Mo or others.  JA55 went out last year and tested the market and came back at a lower rate.  Wondering how this has possibly affected our team in the past and will going forward.

Thoughts???

A Firm Believer That Tony G. Is Coming Back For One More Year

09 February 2013 - 02:45 AM

In watching his post game interviews and reading his body language, it just feels to me that there is a sense of unfinished business.  He has always left that percentage open for a return and never waivered.  I feel he will take a deal similar to what he had last year and give it one more go with the stated fact this will be his final season.  A farwell tour I guess.  If he does retire, you will have to color me extremely shocked....

Falcons Prognostication

12 November 2012 - 06:21 PM

Good afternoon Ladies and Gents.  After about 24 hours of a cooling off period I would like to think that most of us have our heads back on straight at this point.  If you are still twisted about the loss, it is still understandable given the particular opponent.  A number of problems severly limited our chances at winning that game, and could be an immediate problem for our future chances of earning league wide respect/fear...

Running Back

The struggle to get into the end zone from the one is particularly disturbing.  Michael Turner with the number of carries over the years and without an all pro fullback in front of him is "at best" completly limited.  Quiz is a very capable 3rd down back with excellent recieving skills and will be our future Darren Sproles.  However we will have to address the running back spot in the off season as management will most likely not bring in a player at this point to learn the system.

Offensive Line

The guys up front have done a great job gelling as a group in pass protection, that being said I think the lack of a great fullback to help open holes in the run game as in prior years (Ovie) really limits our running as Turner has no break away speed and therefore struggles to allow proper holes to develop.  I fully believe we will be selecting another guard in the second round of the draft to take over for Konz next year when he moves to center. Perhaps a Travis Bond or Larry Warford.  You have seen we do not have a track record of bringing in free agents to fill in spots on the O-line.

Defensive Line

Plenty of depth and developing talent at DT, but I have seen enough,or lack of seeing, to believe that this organization has no faith that Sidbury will every come around at defensive end to make any kind of impact.  Ray Edwards can't get consistant pressure on the QB and I love John Abraham, but he can only have so much left in the tank after all of these years.  Do not be surprised to see Thomas Dimitrioff move up in the draft as he did for Julio Jones and select the best defensive end in the draft (LSU's Mingo or Mongomery).

Penalties

We played very out of character yesterday.  It was a throwback to last year as we were very undisciplined and just out of sorts.  I don't put it of lack of preparation, just being way to hyped up for the game and it could very well have been the reason behind the loss for this game.  I however liken it to a lesson learned that Smitty and the coaching staff will impart on our guys pretty heavily this week.  When we are in a more important situation later on in the season (playoffs) hopefully the guys will harken back to this and "act like they have been there before.

In Conclusion

We have a great passing offense that will have to carry us to a Superbowl victory without being able to get consistant pressure on the QB because we just don't have the horses to do it....

No Problem.....................
