And the Panthers franchise just took 5 steps backwards.  Short is a great player but wow man.  DT getting QB money?

Hes only the 3rd highest paid DT. Let's not pretend it hasnt already happened. Cap is going up, contracts are going up. Mike freaking Glennon got 15 mil a year. Shorts contract will get you Mike Glennon at qb...

That's a market value deal for the type of player Short is. Some of you guys are gonna have a heart attack whenever it time to re-up Grady.

It's not our money so why does it even matter. That's why there are professionals paid millions to handle this kind of stuff. Keep your own talent.

Nice to know we got Poe for essentially half of Shorts annual salary.

Poe's got like less than half the production of Short, so...

Anyways perfect deal for us. Market value was looking at 18m per year, and after Fletcher Cox's deal, it was looking dicey.

Solid contract for a solid pass rushing DT in the league. Not a nice thought for NFC South QBs the next 5 years.

By the time Jarrett looks to get his deal - as someone alluded to - Short's is going to look like a steal.

Lol perfect deal. In what way is a 16mil/year deal for a player coming off a regression year a perfect deal???

Poe was used differently as a 2 gap and hold. He was lucky to get any TFL or Sacks or Pressures. Here he will be 2 gap and upfield 1-2 yards or 1 gap rushing the QB if Jarrett/Hags switches to NT. I would be willing to bet he gets a reasonable amount of sacks. He won't be as limited as much here.

A guy who is in his prime who showed his 2015 form the majority of the the season, albeit his slow 6 week prior performance?

Yes, I'll take 16 mil per year for a guy suppposed to get 18-19mil on the open market.

If you like PFF, here's what they say:

https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-top-10-defensive-free-agents-set-to-hit-the-market/

Kawann Short, DI, Panthers (87.7 overall grade in 2016)

Over the final 10 weeks, however, Short regained his 2015 form and finished the season as the third-best interior defender—second-best in run-defense grade, and eighth in pass-rush grades. At 28 years old, Short likely has several years of top-tier play left in him. He’s graded very well from the minute he entered the league in 2013, and his second-half season explosion in 2016 lands him as the best defensive player in this free-agent class.

Market value right there.

You got to keep your foundation guy's.

I still don't get why fans have heart attacks about how much a guy is worth. We had the same thing when we resigned Jones and Ryan.

What is everyone going to think when Beasley and Jarrett needed extending I think blood pressure medication is going to be needed here.

This...you keep your foundation especially if they are young franchise players..so can't blame them for keeping him we will do the same when the time comes for Jarrett and beas..you don't let home grown talent walk..that's how team become and stay bad

So to keep Short, the Panthers had to take it in the shorts money-wise? :slick::rolleyes::D
