Braves Spring Training

Bartolo says his goal is 30 starts and at least 180 innings. He also offered praise for the Braves in 2016.

Albies is working on getting game ready. He wasn't allowed to workout until after December. He reported to Orlando in early January to begin working. Should be game ready by the end of Spring.

That broken elbow probably earned him at least another 6 months in the minors.

Sean Rodriguez is now expected to miss 2017. He has a complete tear of the rotator cuff

Good possibility of that being a career ender.

It was his non-throwing shoulder.

Sounds like Kemp has trimmed down. Thank God!

Quote

1:43 AM — Matt Kemp is among the early arriving position players. He appears to have dropped some of the bad weight he was carrying last season. He’s definitely trimmer and perhaps even added a little muscle. Kemp wasted little time getting to work. He was out on the main field running and doing agility drills after getting set up in the clubhouse and squaring away his locker. Kemp’s weight became an ongoing winter storyline after Braves GM John Coppolella called attention to it an interview late last season. To his credit, it appears Kemp made the most of his time this winter. His bat is an important part of the Braves lineup.

Hate hearing this about Sean... was hopeful for a strong year with him.

That's great to hear about Kemp. My heart bleeds for Rodriguez, but I'm sure he'd be the first one to say that the situation could have been much worse. His family survived, and that's what matters. From a financial perspective, at least he was under contract to a team when it happened. And I presume we have insurance for this. It sucks, but it sucks in a better way than what happened with Tommy Hanson last year.

Braves challenged Kemp to get in shape when they acquired him. Kemp said his attitude would be altered playing for his childhood team. We'll see if he keeps it up.

Freeman and Swanson reported today. Freeman says this year the optimism is real. He added the last two years it was said but not really believed. This year he says the belief is real, they feel they can compete.

Snitker said Markakis is possible backup 1B. He also added d'Arnaud and Jace are backups for every position but catcher.

Also, apparently Kemp and his new conditioned self has been putting on an impressive power display.

That's a positive though it will still mess with his swing and follow through for awhile.

Snitker says Jim Johnson will start camp as the closer. Viz will be a setup man with Cabrera.

Good. Viz has to earn the closer job again.

I like this because the better reliever is more likely to be used with the game on the line rather than just waiting until the 9th inning.

Brandon Phillips reported today. He says he was unaware of the reported progress the Braves made in November with the Reds before signing Rodriguez. Phillips denied he blocked it and said he told his agent to get a trade to Atlanta done once he found out it failed. He expressed his excitement to play with another Georgia native up the middle.

Vizcaino is only better than Johnson if he stops walking people.

I didn't know the Braves had closer issues? Johnson was solid as closer last year. He was 20 of 23 in save chances last year.

July 7, 2015 through June 30, 2016, 57 games, 1.63 ERA/2.24 FIP, 11.06 strikeouts per 9 innings. Sniker overuses him in June, he breaks down in July. If he's healthy, Vizcaino is just better.
