MY FALCON 2014 OFFSEASON RETOOLING PLAN

This is version one as of 2/22/14. I'll call it my pre-combine plan. Even though the combine has started I haven't watched it or heard any reports. This plan doesn't include trades or comp picks. I'll probably have a post combine tweak or two. Especially my low rounders because they need work. My goals are to get young, get gritty, be prepared to go 3-4 if necessary, run the dam ball and shift from a TonyG dependent air attack to a three wide play action bomb system. We are currently about $20M under the cap. This plan should get us another $16M to spend on free agents and draftees. I plan to be very aggressive in free agency. Not a bunch of big splashes but a lot of solid veterans. Well here we go:

RETIREE (1) - Tony Gonzalez

RESTRUCTURES (2) - Roddy White, Justin Blalock

CUTS (11) - Garrett Reynolds, Stephen Nicholas, Asante Samuel, Osi Umenyiora, Kroy Beirmann, Thomas DeCoud, Jacquizz Rogers, Jason Snelling, Cliff Matthews, Adam Replogle, Andrew Szczerba

WALKERS (9) - Jonathan Babineaux, Chase Coffman, Kevin Cone, Omar Gaither, Peria Jerry, Mike Johnson, Sean Locklear, Corey Peters, Jeremy Trueblood,

FALCON FREE AGENTS (4) - Robert McClain, Joe Hawley, Drew Davis, Dominique Franks

STREET FREE AGENTS (7) - Michael Bennett, Eugene Monroe, Geoff Schwartz, Linval Joeseph, Donald Butler, Vance Walker, Josh McCown

DRAFTEES (7) - Khalil Mack, Calvin Pryor, Lache Seastrunk, C.J. Fiedorowicz, Daniel McCullers, Brent Urban, Kadeem Edwards

ROSTER (53)
QB - Matt Ryan, Josh McCown, Dominique Davis
WR - Roddy White, Julio Jones, Harry Douglas, Drew Davis, Darius Johnson
RB - Stephen Jackson, Lache Seastrunk, Antone Smith
FB - Patrick Dimarco, Bradie Ewing
TE - C.J. Fiedorowicz, Levine Toilolo, Adam Nissley
C - Joe Hawley, Peter Konz
G - Geoff Schwartz, Justin Blalock, Gabe Carimi, Kadeem Edwards
T - Eugene Monroe, Sam Baker, Lamar Holmes, Ryan Schraeder
DE - Michael Bennett, Jonathan Massaquoi, Stansly Maponga, Malliciah Goodman, Brent Urban
DT - Linval Joseph, Vance Walker, Daniel McCullers, Travian Robertson
LB - Khalil Mack, Donald Butler, Sean Weatherspoon, Paul Worrilow, Joblo Bartu, Akeem Dent
S - Calvin Pryor, William Moore, Zeke Motta, Kamal Ishmael
CB - Desmond Trufant, Robert Alford, Robert McClain, Dominique Franks, Dominique Croom
P - Matt Bosher
K - Matt Bryant
LS - Josh Harris
Practice Squad - Sean Renfree, Josh Vaughn, Harland Gunn, Terren Jones, Mickey Shuler, Dominique Croom, Sean Baker, Saeed Lee

Would keep Biermann and Babs, but works for me. Getting Mack and Seastrunk would be awesome.

Lache had ZERO catches this year and only a handful the previous year - not sure if it is because he cannot do it or the Baylor system does not allow for catches to RBs - either way, its a concern.

Like it Bro.

Most don't have real plans you do not bad at all FA I see you have gone very heavy I'm not sure if they'll go that heavy with that many outside guys but it'll be interesting.

Your first four FA acquisitions are not realistic. Perhaps one or two (maybe), but not the four of them.

Like it. Not sure we can attract that number and caliber of free agents, but it addresses needs effectively.

Cut/release/retire 21 players, half of whom were either starters or key backups?

Throw in a handful of injuries plus a boatload of rookie mistakes and you're looking at a replay of 2013. Next, you'd be looking at a wholesale gutting of the coaching staff and front office, followed by a lengthy rebuilding period under an untested regime.

I don' think that's really what you want.

We turn over the roster every year. I believe we added 16 players last year. This plan adds only 14. Last year we cut/let walk Abe, Clabo, Grimes, Turner, RobbinUs, McClure, RayRay, MyCox, Vance, Pete, Hope, Gallarda, Robert James, Svitek, Terrence Johnson, Luke McCown, Usucka Polite, Charles Mitchell and Sidbury. That's 19 players bro. Many of em starters.

Yeah it's definitely free agent heavy but I prefer going to battle with proven vets that know what the hail they're doing. Money wouldn't be the issue because we could get to the $36M range. That's a lot of dough. Monroe and Bennett would have the biggest price tags but they won't be nearly as much as say the Kraken who will certainly be in the double digits.

Poor Antone, can't remember his last name even though it's the same as our HC's.
As for the rest i think you're overselling Walker, underselling Quizz, and not really sure why you added Butler. He's not better than what we have already.
Eugene Monroe won't hit the FA market either. They'll make room for him, they have to.
Our DE's aren't much better, our DT's aren't all that much better, our D will suffer if we try this.

I changed Antone's name. Vance Walker is a dam good pass rusher bro. He had 41 pressures last year. Babineaux had 34, Jelly had 19 and Peters only had 15. Bring him home. Quizz sucks bad. Dude is slow and can't average 4.0 ypc to save his life. His first move is always a dance step behind the line of scrimmage. Seastrunk is what Quizz was supposed to be. A change of pace back. I added Butler because I believe we will eventually go to a 3-4 plus he is a way better cover backer than Warlock who got ripped in coverage. Bennett and Joseph immediately make our Dline better. Both are run stoppers and Bennett can get after the QB. Mack and Mass will also bring pressure and Pryor will bring the pain in the secondary. Our defense would definitely be better against the run and pass.

Maybe you're right. If Walker can step up so be it, i'm just not sure he's better than someone we could get in the draft. As for Bennett i like him but not sure cutting Osi is a good idea; still not sold on Mass being a full fledged starter.
Quizz's value is in his pass protection more than anything. He's saved us a few times based on that alone. He's cheap and i'd keep him around for that if nothing else. Pryor's great if he falls to us in the 2'nd. He would be an upgrade to be sure.

I like it man.

Can't see the Falcons cutting Osi and Biermann...I mean, with the acquisitions you have for the Falcons it wouldn't be a loss, but the Falcons won't cut both of those dudes.

Thumbs up on the work you put into it.

Like it a lot but don't think Calvin Pryor makes it to the 2nd... A lot of people have him rated higher than Clinton-Dix. And I love Seastrunk but I have a pipe dream of us getting Todd Gurley next year (I know wishful thinking) but overall it's pretty good bro
