One of you salary cap gurus out there help me understand this. I'm a firm believer that the Falcons should cut Thomas DeCoud, however, I don't quite understand the ramifications of doing so on the Falcons cap situation next season, if this were to happen, and how cutting DeCoud might impact our ability to sign draft picks and FAs. So, I looked up DeCoud's contract and here are the numbers: http://www.spotrac.c.../thomas-decoud/

So, if the Falcons cut DeCoud AFTER the 2013 season, what are they on the hook for as far as the cap in 2014?

if they can t cut him, he should lose starting and become a swing S or a bigger NB package until we can.

If cut, we will save 3 million total against the cap

Oh, okay. So "dead money" is the term for how much the Falcons would have to absorb?

Osi is an interesting prospect. I love the guy and for veteran leadership purposes I would think we still keep him around but.....

If we drafted Clowney, Osi would represent 3.5 million in savings. Thats a pretty good chunk. I kinda hope we have learned from cutting guys and hoping their young replacements could replace their production.

Not to mention with the Draft being in May IIRC, you would have to cut osi long before the draft to make any sense with potential FA signings.

Yup. Thats what will be left on the books from his contract. If I understand correctly.

The "cap hit" will go from 4.8 to 1.8

Essentially "saving" the Falcons 3 million

It's basically cap space we can't use. If the cap is 123 million and we have 1.3 in dead money our salary cap becomes 121.7 mil

Thanks, man. I appreciate the clarification. I'm definitely convinced now that DeCoud should be CUT!

Osi also has a roster bonus of a million. Which would make him even harder to cut because you would have to do it before free agency begins I believe.

I'd much rather cut Sjax and Snelling. Them combined is almost 4 mil in savings.

Oh 100%

Safety contracts arent that high, so replacing him wouldnt affect the cap much. Unless we went after someone like Byrd

We would gain 3 mil of cap if we flat out cut him .. if he is a june 1st cut we would gain 3.9 mil on the cap but another 900gs will carry over to. the 2015 year

I think cutting Snelling is a foregone conclusion. S-Jax is the wild card though.

We need to just draft a RB or maybe even two. I see no point in paying a RB that insane amount of money.

Completely. ESPECIALLY Sjax.

Im just saying IF we wanted to go after a few high tier guys, Osi could be the extra cap we need.

Essentially we could go after Raji/Hardy/Johnson, Byrd, RG, Oher? If we cut those 3 guys.

Im not saying it would be wise, as we have seen what that kind of spending does to a team. But it IS possible.

I think draft and sign would do us well

Potential "cheap" RBs
Gerhart
Choice
Blount
Starks
Jennings
Felix(ehh)

I think you could get one of them for around 1 million and then draft someone 4th or later and our RB situation would be fine

My cuts right now would be

Decould (3 mil savings)
Samuel (5.25 mil savings)
Sjax (1.75 mil savings
Snelling (1.3 mil savings)
Douglas (2 mil savings)

MAYBE

Biermann (2.5 mil savings)
Nicholas (2 mil savings)
