Daniel Cox

Last season may have been a down year by Brent Grimes' standards, but it didn't alter his position among the best cornerbacks in the league.

Although he missed four games and had only one interception last season, ProFootballFocus.com, a highly regarded football statistical analysis website, still places Grimes among the  league's best.

After Darrelle Revis, the openly accepted best corner in the NFL, Grimes made PFF.com's list as one of the next three veteran players in the league chasing Revis' spot atop the best corner in the league category.

Grouped with Grimes is Houston's Johnathan Joseph and Philadelphia's Nnamdi Asomugha.

PFF.com says Grimes allowed a completion in just 44.6 percent of the balls thrown at him in coverage and broke up 12 passes in addition to his one interception. The only knock they could find against Grimes is the injury he sustained last year. Although he only had the one interception, the low number of completions he allowed showed how well he plays his space. As Grimes has continued to play corner at a high level in recent years he's gotten more and more respect from opposing quarterbacks and fewer balls are thrown his way.

Grimes will return to Atlanta for another season with the Falcons this year and the addition of Asante Samuel to the duo that Grimes and Dunta Robinson make up give the Falcons an imposing trio of corners. The addition of Samuel will allow Robinson to slide inside to cover the slot receiver on certain downs. This offseason Robinson has said that's his preferred position, meaning each corner can play the position they play best.

After the Grimes' category, other cornerbacks recognized as being excellent were Joe Haden, Brandon Flowers and Ladarius Webb.

The funny thing is that there are people on this board that act like Grimes had a bad season because he dropped a few balls.

or because he didnt have another 5 or 6 pick season. teams barely threw at him when he was healthly last year and i dont blame them after the 09 & 10 seasons and then the monster preseason he had in 11.

No, he's short...he's TOO short to be effective over there even though he's done it the past few seasons.  Move him inside and let some other team overpay for him when the season is over!

Yeah, because he didn't already try to come back and re-injure himself....

I don't think Grimes quit on the Falcons in the playoffs. I think he just got a sneak preview of both coordinators' plans and said "What's the point?"

Just really got two things to say about this.

1. PFF is more respected than the people without it claim
2. Peyton was right about Grimes. Should have given him a long term deal in 2010. TD sleeper

When did he re-injure himself? He said he expected to play against Tampa, in which the coaches sat him to protect him, and Smitty said he expected him to play against NY.

Do you really believe Grimes not playing against NY had nothing to do with his contract?

The FO thought so much of him quitting on the team that they put a 10 million dollar tag on him?

he reinjured himself after the NO game and sat out against Tampa... Smitty Dnt know if a player is going to play when it comes to medical catagory... He knows when they know.. so it could be more going on then they want us to believe... We all still Dnt know Wat happened to jerry knee...

So Dnt blame a player just cause he didn't suit up... That's ignorant to the core... RT!!!

He came in during a game, played a few downs, then hobbled off. Against the Saints I believe.

That just means he has a whole season to work towards a long term deal....plus 10 million dollars. Win win for both parties

If a long term deal is to be had, the ideal would be to have one in place by July 16. I still have my fingers crossed toward that happening.
