Saints Offense - TM - Saints
Multiple GMs tell CBS' Mike Freeman they believe Saints coach Sean Payton will find a way to stay in touch with the team during his one-year suspension.
Specifically, the GMs believe Payton will "set up a relay system using people he trusts outside the team to then relay his thoughts to coaches." According to Freeman, GMs who know Payton are "certain" he won't "just sit on hands for a year," and that he'll try to "squirm around ban." Payton is not allowed any contact with the Saints for the duration of his ban, but the reality is the NFL won't be able to stop him if he's intent on relaying messages via a third party. Freeman also reports Bill Parcells is expected to act in an "unofficial advisory role" to the Saints' interim coaches per Payton's request.

Nice to see he's getting a head start on that lifetime ban, by continuing to thumb his nose at the NFL's authority.

If he does and the nfl finds out about it then he should be banned from the nfl permanently

This just shows that nobody trusts this dude to be on any type of "honor" system and rightly so. He's proven to be a deceptive and "above the law" type personality. But some of that breeds success. The payoff is that those types usually go too far and cost their team, organization, or company in the end.

Did anyone actually think he wouldn't be? He actually gets more time to watch other teams and do outside stuff. Stay up on injuries etc etc. Only way he doesn't would be if Benson flat out said not to and we all know that didnt happen. Then again he said stop the Bounties and they didn't listen then, so who knows.

No. It shows GMs are afraid of the Saints.

Sean Payton hasn't even started his suspension yet and we're already seeing articles about this. It's no different than seeing articles about the Saints making a mockery of the Rooney Rule by talking to Parcells.

And by the way... deception is the game in the NFL. Coaches hide their players' injuries all the time even though it's against the rules. And if the NFL is serious about player safety then they need to get rid of the Injury Report, but that affects fantasy football and gambling.... two of the biggest draws to the sport.

They shouldn't even be forced to report that, or it should never be made public and only turned over to NFL security.
I get that Gambling needs that info and thats a huge part of the game. But if they cared about player safety, they would not make it public because it does expose players and makes them targets.

More speculation than anything. I do expect Payton to talk to people, but the simple fact is he's not gonna be in the meetings, he's not gonna be implementing the game plan, and he's not gonna be on the sideline for the games.

There's only so much you can do from a phone call. You're crazy if you think Goodell is gonna let him coach from home.

This will not be tolerated by Goodell. If he actually does this, look for a longer suspension

If I remember correctly, Goodell said that it would be OK for Payton to do this.

Which is why I said in the beginning that the punishment would end up being a slap on the hand.

Don't think for one minute that the NFL League's security staff are not prepareded to do the rest of their job and assure the league that the details of the suspensions are followed to the tee.

"Goodell said Monday that while Payton definitely cannot "coach from home," he would not necessarily be banned from all contact with the team."

He's going to show up on the sideline with the glasses and mustache disguise like Bobby Valentine on the Mets did.

Goodell can't be everywhere.  How does he plan to keep Brees and Payton from talking to each other in bed?

That's interesting to think about, does the ban mean that "He cannot communicate or have any presence with the saints?".  Does it allow for him to perhaps go watch the next opponent for the saints and scout them and tell someone to relay the information back to the saints?

Isn't it supposed to be an NFL complete ban? That's the way I understood it, but that doesn't mean he can't watch TV and tapes which I'm sure he does anyway and say what he thinks. Goodell should have said part of the ban means no talk of the NFL to anyone whatsoever, if he didn't do that that is?
