Series canceled by network during 2nd season filming over animal safety concerns.  Mad I invested time watching a dreary 1st season.

By the way, it's because the subterranean emotions on "Luck" are so potent that you should absolutely keep watching "Luck," if you've given it a shot. Or you should watch it as an interesting, sometimes intensely compelling 9-episode miniseries, if you haven't seen it yet. The show's series finale is one of my favorite hours of television of the year; it's absolutely gorgeous and the narrative comes together with fresh urgency and momentum.

What makes me sad about "Luck's" untimely end is that, as I said in my review of the show, Milch's best work is cumulative. He adds layers of meaning and emotion and nuance over time, and then, at select moments, slays you with moments of clarity and insight that show you his characters' vulnerable cores. Nobody else does that the way he does that, and I really hope his next show gets more than one season to build up that kind of detail and emotional momentum.

Gave Luck every chance, but couldn't get into it.  Unlike Deadwood, which was full of scene-stealers, the cast of Luck was full of people you wish would get the ashtray to the side of the skull treatment, like Ace's flunky got.

Deadwood had already "come together" and roped me in by this point in its first season, and I was still waiting for Luck to give me a little more indication that it had similiar potential. But there's still more about the show that I enjoyed than I didn't.

Nice read from Sepinwall (as always) here...

Some thoughts on the 'Luck' cancellation

Also Milch still has a deal to develop William Faulkner stories for HBO.

Luck reminded me of the big box under the xmas tree.  Immaculately wrapped in shiny paper, with a big red bow, my name in sweeping script, written on a fancy tag.  Open it and it's a McDonald's gift certificate.

Was always mad that HBO ended Deadwood abruptly, but now agree with the writer that it stands up well, just by accident.  Also agree that HBO was likely looking for a reason to kill Luck when the first ratings lagged.  Still, I couldn't invest in a story with so many dirtbags.   They needed that one character with redeeming qualities to play off of.....Luck's version of Ned Stark.

If the show had better ratings and lower production costs, HBO wouldn't have been nearly so quick to kill it.

I would have liked to see where they were going with the story and how they were going to get multiple seasons out of it, but it just never grabbed me.  I found myself browsing the internet through most episodes.

Now they should make a spinoff called Glue.
