Indians shelve closer Chris Perez

Associated Press

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez is out at least one month and possibly six weeks with a strained muscle in his side.

Perez strained his left oblique during his first bullpen session of spring training. Trainer Lonnie Soloff said
Perez will need four to six weeks to recover from the injury. Perez will not be able to pitch in games until the end of the exhibition season. Soloff has not ruled out Perez from being available for opening day because he's a reliever and does not have to build up as much stamina as a starter.

Perez had 36 saves and a 3.32 ERA in 64 games last season.

Soloff said the right-hander's "body was not prepared for the intensity of the bullpen session." Soloff said Perez sustained the injury late in his first workout off the mound.

Sources: Ryan Zimmerman extended

ESPN.com news services

Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and the Washington Nationals agreed to a six-year, $100 million extension Sunday, baseball sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney. Zimmerman also received a full no-trade clause from the Nationals.

The average annual value of Zimmerman's contract is $16.7 million, the most for any third baseman behind the New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez ($27.5 million).

Zimmerman's current contract was set to expire after the 2013 season. The extension includes a seventh-year option that could keep

Zimmerman in a Nationals uniform through the 2020 season. Zimmerman, who is due to earn $26 million over the next two seasons of his current contract, could potentially earn $150 million if the 2020 option is picked up, the sources said.

Zimmerman is one of six major leaguers signed through at least 2019, joining Albert Pujols of the Angels, Prince Fielder of the Tigers, Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies, Ryan Braun of the Brewers and Matt Kemp of the Dodgers.

Zimmerman's contract was negotiated by his agent, Brodie Van Wagenen of CAA Sports.

The two sides talked late into Saturday night, making enough progress for Zimmerman to extend a Saturday deadline that coincided with the start of full-squad workouts. The 27-year-old wanted to get a deal done or shelve the talks so his contract situation wouldn't be a distraction to the team, which has high hopes in the NL East this season.

The main sticking point in the negotiations appeared to be the slugger's desire for a no-trade clause, or at least some assurance that he wouldn't be dealt by the only team he's played for in the big leagues.

The Nationals wanted to lock Zimmerman up so he can play alongside No. 1 draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper.

Zimmerman was the team's first draft pick after the Montreal Expos moved to Washington in 2005 and quickly became the face of the franchise. He's been an NL All-Star, while also capturing Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards.

Last season, Zimmerman was limited by injuries to 395 at-bats. He hit .289 with 12 homers, 21 doubles and 49 RBIs.

For his career, Zimmerman has a .288 batting average, 128 homers, 214 doubles, 498 RBIs, a .355 on-base percentage and .479 slugging percentage, and he's considered one of the top defensive third basemen in the majors.
He's also emerged as one of the leaders of the team in the clubhouse.

"In my opinion, it's just another indication the organization is moving in the right direction," shortstop Ian Desmond said. "To lock up a guy and show loyalty to your franchise player ... and to see 'Zim' be happy at home, and not to have to worry about that any more, it's going to be nice.

I'm happy for him. We definitely need him."

Information from ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Phillies 1B Ryan Howard has setback

Associated Press

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Injured Phillies star Ryan Howard is leaving Philadelphia's spring training camp for a few days to visit the doctor who did the surgery on his torn left Achilles tendon.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel called it "a little setback." Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said it was a "routine checkup."

Howard is going to Baltimore to see Dr. Mark Myerson, who did the operation after the All-Star first baseman injured himself on the final swing of the NL playoffs against St. Louis.

Howard is likely to return to camp on Wednesday. He's been taking batting practice and doing light fielding drills and jogging. It's still uncertain whether Howard will be ready for Opening Day.

Cliff Lee will throw in side session

Associated Press

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Cliff Lee will work in a side bullpen session Sunday when Philadelphia's pitchers throw to hitters for the first time in camp.

Lee is nursing a minor abdominal injury. He's expected to step back into line with the rest of the star-studded pitching staff in the coming week.

Although Lee has had abdominal injuries that have led to trips to the disabled list in the past, including two springs ago while with Seattle, he shrugged off his current pain as "just a precautionary deal."

"It's similar to the ab strains I've had in the past," Lee said. "Basically the early stages of that in the past I tried to power through it. I'm trying to be smarter with it now and keep it a small issue."

Lee similarly had a minor blip on his early spring training radar a year ago, when he complained of a minor strained muscle in his left side. But the left-hander didn't miss any time in the exhibition or regular season schedule and finished his first full season in Philadelphia 17-8 with a 2.40 ERA and a major league-best six shutouts.

For the 33-year-old Lee, the 2012 regular season can't arrive soon enough after having the sting of last postseason with him throughout the winter.

A season that began with World Series-or-bust ambitions and an ace-laden starting pitching staff ended with the Phillies losing to St. Louis in the first round of the playoffs. Lee, who signed a five-year, $120 million contract to join the Phillies two winters ago, figured prominently in the first-round exit.

In Game 2 against the Cardinals, Lee was spotted a 4-0 lead after two innings but gave up five runs on 12 hits in a 5-4 loss. The Phillies lost the series in a decisive Game 5.

"It was disappointing the way it ended, but we got beat by a team that was peaking at the right time, they won the World Series," Lee said. "We got flat-out beat. Personally I wish I could go back and pitch Game 2 again. I had a 4-0 lead. But that's the only thing I contributed to in the postseason and I let that lead slip away, so that was disappointing for me."

Lee is one of a handful of veterans who have come to the Phillies for the opportunity to win the first World Series ring of their respective careers. Jim Thome signed up in November while former Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay and All-Star Placido Polanco arrived two winters ago.

Others with similar aspirations have come and gone: Roy Oswalt, who remains a free agent, and Raul Ibanez, who recently signed with the New York Yankees.

Although the makeup of the team changed -- Joe Blanton, coming off a season-long elbow injury, replaces Oswalt in the rotation -- Lee believes the same winning pieces are in place.

"I think our talent level is a lot like last year. It's off the charts," said Lee, who saw the Phillies add Thome and All-Star closer Jonathan Papelbon this winter. "We've got high expectations, and we've got the talent to back it up. Our goal is to win the World Series, just like every team should be. I like our chances based on our talent and makeup and chemistry and all that stuff. It's going to be a fun year."

Twins' Joel Zumaya done for 2012

Associated Press

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Joel Zumaya has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will miss the season.

An MRI taken Sunday revealed the injury.

It's the latest crushing injury for the hard-throwing reliever, who was trying to revive his career with the Minnesota Twins. Zumaya signed an incentive-laden, one-year deal with the Twins, who hoped he could bolster their bullpen.

He had not thrown a pitch since June 2010 after breaking his elbow while pitching in a game at Target Field.

Zumaya lasted just 13 pitches in his first session of live batting practice Saturday before walking off the mound with pain in his elbow.

General manager Terry Ryan says he has not spoken with the 27-year-old Zumaya about his future yet.

A.J. Burnett has orbital fracture

PITTSBURGH -- Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett will undergo surgery on Friday to repair a fractured right orbital bone.

The right-hander injured himself Wednesday at the team's spring training facilities in Bradenton, Fla., after a bunt attempt caromed off his face. He flew to Pittsburgh late Wednesday to be further evaluated.

There is no immediate timetable for Burnett's return. The 35-year-old was acquired in a three-player trade with the New York Yankees last month and was expected to be the No. 1 starter on a team looking to improve on a 72-90 record last season.

Burnett, a two-time World Series winner, is also trying to rehabilitate his career. He struggled during his final two seasons in New York, posting a 21-26 record with a 5.20 ERA. He led the major leagues with 25 wild pitches in 2011 while allowing a career-high 31 homers.

Why would the Braves go and get another starting pitcher?
