Texans’ Mario Williams not worried about big bucks

By Mark J. Miller
Posted ImageHouston Texans outside linebacker Mario Williams will be an unrestricted free agent on March 13 and the team is "trying to create enough salary-cap space to make Williams an offer impressive enough to get him to sign a long-term contract before free agency begins," according to the Houston Chronicle.
Williams, however, is saying that he's not worried so much about how large the pile of cash is that's offered. "I'm not worried about that," Williams said Thursday, the paper reports. "It's really not that big of a deal to me. I was the first pick (in 2006), and I've already had everything I really wanted, so my biggest thing is to be in a good position, a good scheme, a good system and continuing my career. Hopefully, it works out. It's always important to be in a position to be successful."
The Texans shelled out $54 million to Williams over the last six seasons. He delivered with 192 solo tackles, 53.5 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, and one interception.
This past season, he started the season with five sacks in five games but his season ended early with an injury to his pectoral muscle. The Chronicle reports that Williams says he's been fully healthy for the last two weeks.

I saw this, too. It looks like he's going to do everything on his end to help the Texans get him signed. But between him & Foster, I just don't see how it's going to happen.

i still think somehow, he will stay in Houston.

the thing is I dont think he should be an OLB. He has the size and ability to be a devestating DE in a 3-4 even.

Just look at this front 7, it would be, without a doubt, the best in the NFL:

RE: Mario Williams
NT: Shaun Cody
LE: JJ Watt
OLB: Brooks Reed
ILB: Brian Cushing
ILB: DeMeco Ryans
OLB: Conner Barwin

I dont hink the Texans need to franchise Foster.
they can use the RFA tag on him, and he wil be cheap. And if another team offers him a deal nd Houston gets a 1st for him, that is a win, because Tate is plenty capable of shouldering the load!

Houston is going to resign him, and I bet the deal ends up a good bit smaller than what people think it will be.

Robert Mathis is our best bet.

I still think Mario will get a deal simlar to Peppers or Johnson. He doesnt have to demand it to get a top NFL deal. Houston will make him a solid offer to prevent him from testing the market too heavily.

IMO the only way he leves HOU is if he is determined to be a 4-3 DE, and wants out of the 3-4.

I would prefer to re-sign Abe than to pay Mathis. Abe has been a better DE, and doing it gettig all the attention, where Mathis had the benefit of Freeney. Abe is also a very solid run defender for a smaller DE, not so sure the same can be said for the Colts DE's. Lastly, Mathis is only 2-3 years younger than Abraham. Not worth the risk IMO.

Sounds to me like the defensive system will play a huge role in his decision. Hopefully with Nolan coming in, and us staying in a 4-3, we may appeal to him.

With that said I haven't heard anything to suggest he doesn't like playing OLB in 3-4.

Houston doesn't have the space to offer him a Peppers Johnson type contract and resign Foster. They will be making some big cuts to make room and still add some talent other places

I'll take a wild stab at what I think he'll get. 6 years 75 mil. 30 mil guaranteed.

I don't think he'll get a deal as big as Peppers.

That is what I am thinking too.

if they work the cap right his hit this year should only be about 7 million which would still leave us with significant amount to sign who we need.

it is amazing the strings you can pull to make the cap work. OAK, WAS and others have been doing it for years. Restructure a couple of other players and get the deals done. They dont really need to hit UFA hard, they are already a top team. They can probably just build through the draft and work on re-signing their own (Mario,Foster and the OC)

the team will find a way to get Mario that deal. There have been quotes saying they plan on "making him an offer he cant refuse".

As for Foster, I would make Mario a priority over him all day long. I think Foster can be signed to the restricted tender even. they dont need to franchise him. I heard the only reason they are considering the franchise tag is because they are worried a team with a low round 1 pick may sign him to an offer sheet (like NE or another rival).

IMO the tone of Mario's comments suggest to me that Houston is no slam dunk to keep him.

Sounds about right. Peppers deal was front loaded as there was no salary cap in place that year.

It'll be somewhere between what Johnson and Peppers got.
