PlayStation Network, the service that PlayStation users have come to know will soon be a thing of the past.

On February 8, 2012 Sony will take the final step to unifying their online services by introducing it’s users to the Sony Entertainment Network, or SEN for short.

The SEN will take place of the PSN, the online gaming service that Sony launched alongside their PlayStation 3 on November 11, 2006.

This name change is Sony’s way of getting closer to their goal of “ establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account.”

This change is just a name change, Sony will not require users to alter their current PSN ID or password.

The PS3 and Vita will receive a System Software Update that will introduce a new Terms of Service before users can gain access to the Sony Entertainment Network.

Sony is currently in the process of sending out e-mails to all PSN users that will alert them of this new change.

Why would they change the name? PSN is a better name then SEN.. wtf?

Wonder if the negative press from last spring's hacking sabotage has influenced a name change.  I don't care what they're called, just wish they'd hurry up and approve Skyrim patch 1.4.  Lost a few hours yesterday when I got trapped in Jorrvaskr

Probably has to do with negative press of the hack, and the fact that they will try and create a sony ecosystem with their phones and tablets, like xbox has/is doing with their Phones, Computers, etc. Like how Zune brand is taking over Xbox Live.

I don't really care what they call it as long as it's still free.

I found this.

The name change is part of Sony’s greater scheme of unification of all of their online services.

The reason behind the name change is because Sony wants to establish “a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account.”

Current PSN users WILL NOT have to alter their existing Online ID or passwords. A new Firmware update will be made available to both the PS3 and Vita platforms later this week in preparation for the change. There will be some new Terms and Conditions to skim through before you can reconnect to the PSN via the SEN.

We understand that Sony are sending PSN users emails explaining the change as we speak. Check your inbox.
